Vienna, Prince Abdullah bin Khalid bin Sultan bin Abdulaziz, the Saudi ambassador to Austria and Governor of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), has emphasized that the Kingdom always attaches the highest importance to nuclear safety, praising valuable efforts made by the Department of Nuclear Safety to enhance safety in all areas, restoring confidence in the possibility of operating nuclear plants on international safety bases and standards, expressing the Kingdom’s appreciation for the efforts made to adopt necessary updates to nuclear safety requirements and standards.
In a speech delivered at the IAEA Board of Governors session currently being held in the capital Vienna, he praised the assistance being provided by the Agency to member countries to support the development of appropriate national legal frameworks by providing advice on drafting national nuclear legislations; this is what the agency has done towards the Kingdom, confirming that the Kingdom will continue to work with the agency to ensure that the highest safety standards are applied in its peaceful uses of nuclear energy.
Prince Abdullah also stressed the right of states to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. He pointed out that it is necessary for states to observe highest safety standards in their facilities, and to provide all requirements and procedures for this to ensure the safety of the nuclear facility and national plans for a rapid, adequate and appropriate response to nuclear emergencies.
