The OIC Assistant Secretary General for Humanitarian, Cultural and Social Affairs, Special Envoy of the Secretary General to Afghanistan, Ambassador Tarig Ali Bakheet, today (6 January 2022) on behalf of the Secretary General met the Minister Delegate to the Minister of Health and Social Development for Humanitarian Action, Solidarity, Refugees and Displaced Persons of the Republic of Mali, Mr Oumarou Diarra.
During the audience, Ambassador Bakheet stressed the great importance that the General Secretariat gives to humanitarian work and development efforts in the Sahel and Lake Chad Basin region, pointing out that this finds its true expression in the upgrading of the Organization’s humanitarian office in Niamey to an integrated regional mission. Ambassador Bakheet added that, the OIC backs the peace process in Mali and supports humanitarian and development work in that member country.
For his part, the Malian minister congratulated the ASG for the trust placed in his person by the leaders of the Member States, wishing him full success in serving the wider Muslim community. He said that Mali looks forward to the General Secretariat and Member States for support in its efforts to combat terrorism and achieve national stability, security and development, with special focus on providing urgent relief support to displaced persons and refugee women, widows and orphans victims of terrorism and natural disasters due to drought and climate change.
Also significant, the meeting explored ways to further strengthen cooperation between the OIC General Secretariat and the Republic of Mali on issues and areas of shared interest.
